Jim Crotts, owner of Eagle Putting Greens in Summerfield , N.C. , which has been installing greens throughout much of the South for the better part of 12 years, believes improvements in technique and the low maintenance required are most responsible for the spike in demand. 'The business is growing every year," Crotts says. "Fifteen years ago there were about five Companies [doing this type of work]. Today there are probably 105."

The demand, though, isn't coming just from homeowners, Condo developers, apartment communities, casinos and businesses have all shown a decided interest in the concept "We built a 10,000-square-foot green for a retirement center in Winston-Salem," Crotts says, with more than a hint of pride. "Biggest artificial green in the country."
